Switching to Umnia
I have been contemplating switch to Umnia but yet I couldn’t make the decision although I’ve heard lots of good feedback about their service especially in mobile coverage.
Couple of days ago Umnia came up with UMax service which satisfy my needs, first to get rid of my land line because Orange land lines doesn’t have Naked ADSL accounts yet and because of portability that UMax offer.
My Tedata account is about to expire in like 45 days so I have to make up my mind either to stick with a land line but to go with Orange Internet instead of Tedata or to cancel all of my accounts and go with Umnia’s Umax.
Umnia’s UMax is cheaper but not to the limit of making a quick decision not to mention the ambiguous Class of Service
which I didn’t like the idea of having such option.
Class of Service - There are three Classes Of Service (COS) Platinum, Gold and Silver. Each COS offers a different class of service in terms of getting access to the internet. The Platinum COS offers the highest priority, followed by Gold and Silver. COS ensures that you get priority access to the services over other customers when the network is congested.
Also their QOS makes me question their service reliability *in a good manner as a consumer* especially when they didn’t state the amount of shared bandwidth and their shared bandwidth selling policy; I don’t want to end up with an over soled bandwidth account.
Quality of Service (QOS) provides you with fixed assigned bandwidth as opposed to a shared bandwidth which is offered to all customers. There are two types:
Committed: It refers to fixed assigned band width speed to the subscriber.
Shared: It refers to dynamic band width management to all subscribers to use the band width.
| Speed | Duration | COS * | QOS ** | Up/Down | price JD |
| 1 Mbps | 12 months | Silver | Shared | Asymmetric | 294 JOD |
| 1 Mbps | 12 months | Gold | Shared | Asymmetric | 305 JOD |
| 1 Mbps | 12 months | Platinum | Shared | Asymmetric | 316 JOD |
*COS: Class of Service
** QOS: Quality of Service
The difference between Silver, Gold and Platinum service quality isn’t a big deal for anyone subscribing annually, so I guess all people going to run after the Platinum quality and then we are going to have a crowded shared internet.
Also, Umnai’s Online calculator (UMax Price Plan) doesn’t count the %16 sales taxes nor it does tell if there is any hidden fees like university taxes that applies to all communication related bills (Internet, Mobile, Landlines) and in this case UMnia have only got the portability to offer, not the price nor the reliability of service or I’m over analyzing here? and yeah we have to add 200 JOD for the wireless modem price or 6 JOD a month for monthly rental
I really cannot see that they’re any cheaper than landlines, Anyway, 45 days counting and I really wish they will prove the opposite by providing a reliable service, I’d compromise the price with portability but only if they have a reliable service.

Think of the potentials. Going around Amman surfing the Internet using your OWN internet connection from anywhere. I’ve seen a service similar to this somewhere. I think to have a good reception you’ll need to install some antenna at your home. But maybe Umniah UMax coverage would be better than their cellphone coverage!
Have you seen the USB router? How big it is?How much does it weight? Is it really portable?
Doesn’t any ISP in this country realize that we want more than 2Mbps? I had 6Mbps when I left the States!
waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa :S
I want my unlimited TEdata account back …
seriously am still just as undecided sine am a heavy user and if i take umniah i will have to deal with evolutionary slow internet connection if i go over my limit and i don’t want to pay up to top up my limit (64kbps and i think 14 jd’s for 7 gigs, need to check )
so so far i prefer to go to orange and get me a 2 meg since i can live with a 512 for 25 days of the month and not the 64kbps
i wonder does anyone know of the new isp we have in town that provides internet through the electric outlets (internet through power cables) they have an office but i haven’t had time to check them out
give me an unlimited downloads account even if its for twice the original price and i’ll be happy
