Umniah has a flying saucer like WiMax modem
Just came back from Umniah’s office, their offer is promising and I can tell that I’m considering their Umax offer seriously.
Their 2Mbs offer has a bandwidth cap of 10Giga and you can pop-up cap by 1GB, 3GB or 7GB the 7GB is around 14 JOD which is NOT a reasonable price but yet the best available, at least this option is available unlike most of land line based ADSL in Jordan.
I went their specifically to see their WiMax modem and I can assure you that you might have seen it before in star wars or some documentary about UFO, the device is identical to almost all flying saucer that we have seen on TV documentary shows or movies.
It’s not annoyingly big as I though but yet it’s not as small as the one that Zain has in Kuwait nor like the one that Qtel has; however, the Hijabi sales chick advised me not to buy the device as the new small, USB devices are coming soon (as in three months), as for Cos (Quality of Service) she was honest enough to say that you wont feel the difference now as their service is new and aint jammed yet but later when they make more customers you will feel it of course.
Now, I’m tempting to go now to get Umnia’s Umax but I first have to google if I could buy that small slim device myself and use it instead of renting or buying their flying-saucer device.
Also, there has been lots of solid that Zain & Orange might launch same service by the next year; which should decrease the price dramatically unless they achieved a deal of price freezing just like the one they have with Land-line based ADSL.
What I forgot to take note of is the device name so I could google for smaller ones but I’m sure Qwaider can help in this case unless he lives in the country side of AMIRIKA with some cows :p
They have nice offer for the first thousand customer which includes a free mobile line with 500 umnia-umnia free minutes + a wireless router if you subscribe for a year and 50% of the wireless router if you subscribe for six months.
One last thing, If you didn’t like the service, or if the coverage was below your satisfaction you can get a refund by filling a compliant form and you will get your money back within 14 working days (at least according to Hijabi sales chick).

HI JAD,
i read your website on daily basis.
recently i noticed that you market for umniah and i really hate them and i began lose interest in reeding your website.
would you please keep it down so we have the chance to read more interesting topics?
thank you and keep ahead..
Fadia
I’m sure you misunderstand me here, lemme clear it up for you and others;
1-) I’m not fan of Umniah at all; I’m a die hard Mobilecom customer, been with them for 11 years.
2-) I’m all for un-wiring Internet in Jordan
3-) All for cheaper & faster Internet access in Jordan because I know what that can do for the next generation.
4-) My land-line ADSL is about to expire so I’m thinking out load while making the decision to stay with Tedata, going back to Orange or Umniah Umax.
5-) If you have read the Umax posts, then you should have noticed that I wasn’t promoting them rather than breaking down their offer and again thinking out load while doing so.
You could end this by finding a reliable and cheap Internet provider for me
One last thing, How’s your Tedata account? how they’re treating you? any special offers?
nice, yeah the one in kuwait is just awesome, my dad has it!

Hey buddy
Where I live we have a competition between 3G and WiMax with WiMax “promising” to deliver higher performance. so far 3G (and 3G+, 3.5) are winning hands down (and don’t get me started on EV-DO)
The WiMax offer here, is 18$/m (unlimited of course) but the QoS wasn’t enough for my friends (Korean) to stream IPTV for their favorite shows. While 3G wasn’t that great either for them. Their Cable/DSL was able to fulfil and exceed their expectations (I saw HDTV quality over their broad band connection and WOW!)
Anyway, the PROBLEM with WiMAX is that there are MANY implementations and they’re NOT compatible! Crap you would think people have figured this out by now. But no, everyone wants to create the better standard according to his and his brother’s interpretation
Long story short, I would expect UMAX to be a clone of the stuff in Asia and not similar to what’s going on here in the US, so chances are slim to none to be able to buy a modem from the US that will work there
I coupe be WAAAAAAY off here, but I think that sums it
Without solid testing it on the ground back in Jordan no one can say if it’s better or not
Oh and if size does matter to you, check this Clearwire releases first pre-WiMAX PC card for laptops - (Engadget)
I think it’s an AIRSPAN router
If I were you I would get the Wimax now, and when the USB comes out you can buy it.
I wanna see Wanadoo’s response to the cap thing before I react. I subscribe monthly to Wanadoos 2Mb plan so I can switch anytime. The cap thing is killing me, but it’s a good sign.
When I was in Toronto, I went through all these phases:
A- only dialup
B- ISDN
C- 512Kb ADSL with a rediulous limit
D- 1 Mbit ADSL with 5GB CAP and disconnection if you keep hitting the limit
E- 1 Mbit ADSL with 10GB CAP and $7 per additional GB
F- 3 Mbit ADSL with 20GB CAP and $7 per additional GB
G- and finaly 3Mbit ADSL with no cap !
Now if they can save us all the trouble and just skip to step G. On the othwer hand in the UK you can now get 20Mbit for $80 a month in some areas. Bwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa !
Salam cd,
Long time no chat, I’ve been really busy and about to just kick the habit of being an expat. Im just sick of it.
In any case, I was not aware that QTel had a WiMax offering. and to tell you the truth Im not sure they do.
The WiMax thing is good news for me, as always get throttled when go back to Jordan because of the limited connectivity. Hopefully they will make a temporary subscription model where I can get one for the month I am in Jordan.
do you have any information on whether there is any throttling going on?
Moey
Yeah, it should be awesome.
NOTE: your link session expired.
Qwaider
so we can’t buy a one? hmm Ok
NOTE: what I’m afraid of is that Batelco is the Internet provider behind WiMax of Umnia, and Batelco has a ruined reputation.
Firas
Even if you know that Batelco is behind the Internet of Umax?
Hani Obaid
Unfortunately you wont see much of that; Orange is the strongest now with the largest customer base and oddly they act as if they don’t care or they reached the fact that they are un-beatable.
Sari
Dude, Qtel has a great commercial on Al-Jazeera and on MBC, Qatar TV about their 7.2Mbs offer, you got to see it.
as for throttling yes they do and that’s exactly the definition of Cos (Class of Service).
Wow! You got WiMax there ar Jordan? In Malaysia, WiMax will be available next year i think. The most popular here is TMNet Streamyx 1-4 MBps and i got and info that they are trying on 10MBps. But they are pricy. I wonder when we will be able to get free internet service like Japan, Wi-Fi all over Japan. In fact the village also got 5MBps.
salam everybody
I advice anyone who are planning to buy uminah WIMAX to rethink about it.
I subscribed since 2 weeks, the received signal strength is beyond typical it about -50 dBm(by an external CPE).. which indicates that no problem in get/send between the BS and CPE,even though it is the worst service ever! the dial up connection is better than their wimax…. i call them everyday to fix anything needs to be fixed… all i get is ” sorry for being late the problem has been reported to wimax team”,pals in any system when u face a single trouble u can handle it easily but i think in thier situation there are many cumulative troubles the most noticeable one is thier weak technichal team and their internet provider “batelco”
Umniah WiMax is terrible, I’m using it since a week or so, it’s terrible.
I didn’t expect anything good coming from Umniah and Batelco anyways.
lo,
Ashraf /Mamdouh… hows the download speed? and most important, the ping?
am at irbid, college, ofc it will take pretty long time for the wimax to reach here.. but it solves much of ma problems if so. am at a students buildings, and lets say that u realy wont like it to be under the mercy of a lazy admin :@.. not to mention the download limit is so little, net is crowded and expinsive…
cant register ma own land line, dont have a phone number.. think of it as a hotel like system, only room WC and kitchen..
ma point is.. would be worth it to switch?
pings over 120ms is considerd very high for me..
