#Watermark

AI watermarking and content provenance are the technical attempts to solve a social problem, the collapse of the shared assumption that a piece of media is what it appears to be. These posts cover the approaches, statistical watermarks embedded at generation, cryptographic provenance attached after the fact, detection tools that try to identify synthetic content without a mark, and the harder questions underneath. Who runs the watermark registry? What happens when a watermark is stripped? Can provenance survive a screenshot, a re-encode, a meme? The pieces here treat watermarking as necessary and insufficient. It is a piece of the trust infrastructure the synthetic media era requires, but it cannot substitute for the social and legal structures that actually govern evidence.
